Kostanay Regional Russian Drama Theater originates from 1922. The opening of the first stationary theater was held in April 1922. Prior to this, the venue for the performances in Kustanai was the People’s House and the city’s leading institutions — the real school, the women's gymnasium. In the archival documents for the years 1922-1923 it is mentioned that there was already a theater in Kustanai, but there was no permanent troupe.

And only in 1937 a homogeneous cast of actors with a repertoire in Russian was formed.

Now the theater has a galaxy of wonderful, talented artists. With their work they invariably admire the audience R. Polukhina, Honored Artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan A. Oleynikova. Artists V. Bityukova, N. Dedyukh, Y. Kudryashova, A. Udesiani, O. Smirnov, O. Babanov, and other talented actors of the troupe won the love and recognition of the Kostanay spectator. The theater has an internal potential that allows actors to work with creative intensity and inspiration, to delight the audience with new interesting premieres.

The theater actively cooperates with directors of theaters of the CIS countries, takes an active part in international festivals: Theater Man (Chelyabinsk), Theater Divertimento (Israel), Friendship Bridge (Yoshkar-Ola), etc. More than once awarded with numerous diplomas and diplomas.

If we talk about the repertoire, then in the theater with great success there are performances staged both from modern plays (“Rumor has it”, “Sirena and Victoria”, “Prima Donna”, “Restless Spirit” and others.) And based on classical drama (“Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District”, “Dance Teacher”, “Uncle's Dream”, “Pannochka”, “The Marriage of Figaro”, “The Marriage of Balzaminov” and many others), as well as the theater is not afraid of experiments, presenting the modern classic to the audience.
